To properly maintain your container, and for best results:

When selecting food plants to grow, choose types that grow well in containers (check seed package or plant information).

Select a container with drainage holes, and a saucer to collect drained water. Water only as needed. Ensure that the soil is moist but not saturated. Water slowly until you see water collecting in the saucer. Discard any water that remains in the saucer after an hour.

Prepare the container with a good quality soil, suitable for containers (e.g., 3-parts potting mix to 1-part well-rotted compost).

Every spring, apply 2.5 cm of good quality compost to your container (try not to pile it up around woody stems).

Growing from seed? Follow instructions on seed package for depth, spacing and thinning.

Using transplants? Follow instructions on plant ID tag. Dig a hole the depth of the plug (roots + soil), and gently remove plug from the container and place in hole.

Weeds will compete with your food plants. Remove small weeds and discard in the compost.

Each food plant has its own growing period and harvest time. Follow specific directions for each food crop.
